What is Trigger Finger Release?
Trigger finger release is a surgical procedure performed to treat trigger finger, a condition where one or more fingers get stuck in a bent position.
Indications for Trigger Finger Release
Trigger finger release may be recommended if conservative treatment fails to resolve the condition and your quality of life is adversely affected.
Diagnosis for Trigger Finger Release
Trigger finger is diagnosed based on the medical history and a physical examination, without any special testing required. Your doctor can confirm the diagnosis by looking at your hand and asking about your symptoms.
Trigger Finger Release Surgery
Percutaneous trigger finger release surgery is a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia. Your surgeon makes one small incision on the affected finger area, about an inch long and releases the tight portion of the flexor tendon sheath.
Postoperative Care for Trigger Finger Release
You may return home soon after your surgery. You may feel some discomfort in your hand for a few weeks. Your doctor will suggest some postoperative procedures for a better recovery. These include:
- Rest and elevation: Raising your hand and resting it can help to reduce swelling.
- Ice packs: Regularly applying ice to the incision for the first 48 hours can reduce inflammation.
- Incision care: Keeping the incision site clean and dry while it heals.
- Hand exercises: Your doctor may suggest moving your finger soon after surgery followed by gentle exercises which stiffen the hand and improve functional movement.
